How we end up in the era of Contemporary Paintings?
The world of art has seen a lot of variations in art style, themes, artistry, and perception. You may see an abstract art because you relate to it by making a connection with your past. On the other hand, I may connect with the same piece of artwork relating it to my future. The perception can be different, but the joy of crafting or availing the artwork is same. However, with time, a lot of conventional art standards have vanished and many new styles have overtaken. One such form of art is contemporary.
What is contemporary art?
In layman language, any piece of art is it painting, music, pottery, video, audio or allied that is made today is contemporary art. I know, this is a vague definition and you may get confused while distinguishing the diverse art forms. This is why art experts define that modernism started in the1960s. But, how do we end up in this era and why is contemporary referred to as an art form of our time?
Let’s take a look:
Contemporary art took a flight on the wings of pop culture that emerged in the 1950s and reach its peak during the 1960s.It was during this time that young artists thought that the artworks they are witnessing in museums, fairs, and conventions do not connect with the daily lives they live. So, in order to challenge the traditional art regulations, artists turned to the different point of origins such as Hollywood movies, pop music, comic books, advertising and similar.
Some of the known pop artists are Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, and Claes Oldenburg. Pop art sees the first time that artists are defying the conventional subject matters that revolve around morality, mythology, and classic history. Instead, artists started to reflect ordinary objects and daily routines of people in their paintings. The main vision was to bring the pop art culture at the same level as fine art was. You can say that pop art paved the way for contemporary style form to originate and flourish in our times.
This astounding style of art was originated from the pop art itself. Another American art movement, photorealism got prevalent in the late 1960s and early 1970s.Artists used to collect one or more photographs to acquire the details that help them to craft an exceptional piece of artwork.Started mainly in New York and California, this art form gained momentum in 1968. Similar to pop art, this form of artistry was also meant to protest and overlook the conventional ways of creating an art piece.Contemporary paintings are also defying the shackles of traditional means to create art. Never ever, a photograph or more were used to create an astonishing piece of painting. Some of the known names of this art forms are Robert Bechtle, Charles Bell, Chuck Close, Robert Cottingham, and Richard Estes.Photorealism also knocked the beginning of contemporary art form.
“Art is never a commodity.”This is the sole purpose for which conceptualism comes into origin. Some of you may say that conceptualism started in 21st century itself, but the roots go back to the 1960s.In this form of art, the idea behind the creation is prioritized above the artistry itself. The point was that the conventional way in which an artwork was made defines it more of a commodity than a creative concept. The conventional aspects such as aesthetics, expression, skill, and marketability were completely ignored to judge a piece of art, instead, the articulated idea behind the masterpiece was prized above all.Again, all this was happening to make way for a contemporary form of art. Few renowned names of this art form are Joseph Kosuth, Lawrence Weiner, Damien Hirst, Ai Wei Wei, and Jenny Holzer.
Like the above-mentioned art forms, minimalism also started in America in the past-World-War-2 time frame.with an aim rebel against the conventional means of art forms bent their inclination more towards the geometric abstraction.People in the 1960s were wanting to view art differently; different from what it has been viewed. Few of the noted artists of this movement are Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, and Dan Flavin.
So, that’s how Contemporary art form dominated the entire world. It was an amalgamation of numerous art movements that were started to protest against the traditional opinion and standards to make and judge an artwork. For more updates like this, stay tuned.
