Too Busy for Healthy Habits? Here Are 6 Easy and Fun Solutions

It’s everyone’s goal to be healthy – but not everyone is aware of that. In fact, most of us aren’t. Especially in this day and age when our days are getting busier as we speak! Who even has the time to devote to meal prepping and visiting the gym and going for a massage here and there? It would be lovely if we did, but the harsh reality is that we’re probably struggling to meet deadlines, and playing dead when we don’t. So, for all of you out there who wish they had more time to spend on healthy habits, here are our suggestions for activities that are easy, fun and ideal for us sloths.

1.    Up Your Water Intake

Up Your Water Intake

Drinking plenty of water is probably the easiest trick you can do to stay healthy. But sometimes even something as easy as grabbing a glass of water can become difficult because we simply forget it! The solution is simple, though. When you are staring at a computer and working just have a bottle near you. The goal is to drink one litre in the morning, for example, and another one in the afternoon. That’s not hard! Seeing your bottle there all the time, it will only be natural that you reach for it every now and then, and having a goal in mind – drinking it up – should make it easier. If you don’t like its plain taste, add some fresh fruit such as lemon and lime for a taste spike.

2.    Don’t Forget Your Breaks

Having a break every hour or so is crucial for your concentration and overall wellbeing. You might think you don’t have the time for a break, but actually not taking one can mess up your work and make you even more stressed. Step away from the computer, take a walk up and down a few flights of stairs, go outside to breathe in some fresh air (even in the cities it’s fresher than the stale one inside). No amount of work will seriously miss you for five minutes, and on the other hand, it can benefit from that a lot.

3.    Cycle to Work

Cycle to Work

Best way to do anything is if that anything is killing two birds with one stone. So if your classic excuse for physical exercise and fitness is not having time, why not make it such that you’re actually doing something else? We’re talking cycling to work. If the distance to your office allows it, meaning, you’re not usually commuting one hour by train, you should definitely start biking, even a few days a week. Get yourself a good bike, such as one from Bicycles Online, and enjoy the new way to get from point A to point B while simultaneously working out!

4.    Pick One Really Healthy Meal

Pick One Really Healthy Meal

Just one. For starters. Then make it in such a way that it’s the epitome of a healthy meal. If it’s lunch, let it contain one portion of protein, a salad, a fruit, and a few nuts. If it’s breakfast, make oatmeal and top it with fresh fruits. It’s healthy and will make you feel good. If you’re afraid it’s not a lot of food – well, it’s not, but it’s the first step towards portion control. You definitely won’t be hungry, that’s for sure, unless you’re a professional athlete, which you’re not because you wouldn’t be reading this. But hey, you can be one day! Start with a healthy meal every day. Other ideas: chicken breast and salad, lean turkey burger and low-fat cheese with protein bun… If you feel you will succumb to the call of junk food, make your healthy meal in advance, and it’ll be a shame to waste it.

5.    Meditate… Kind Of

You don’t have to be a seasoned yogi who has spent years in India or Bali in a spiritual quest. Even five minutes of mediation of days can work in your favour! Any activity that will help you to focus and be present in the moment can help to cope with stress, and detaching from your obligations just for a little while. It can be guided meditation through an app, focused breathing, or yoga – whatever suits you best. If you don’t know how to do it, start with guided meditations. If you still find it too weird, try to take five minutes when you get up or just before you go to bed. Spend them in silence and try to block any thoughts. This will be impossible at times, but it doesn’t matter. Persist. Think of it as recharging your batteries and embracing the road to a healthier lifestyle!

6.    Meet Real Humans

Sometimes we’re so busy that all we think about is work and errands to run. While it’s necessary to put bread on the table, sometimes this can end up in curling up in front of a TV, deprived of a meaningful human connection. But we are wired for human connection and interaction, and catching up with friends and spending time with them is actually beneficial for your overall wellbeing. Don’t underestimate the power of a community! So instead of binging on an exciting new TV show, call your friend and meet downtown.

Being healthy and fit doesn’t require a lot from you. Just be mindful about your everyday choices, find ways to incorporate little things into your routine, and you’ll soon feel better!
